Cyprus and London
From Cyprus, with a life ahead.
His father, Mihalis Charalambous, drove a bus at Agios Tychonas, near Limassol, and was well known around the village. On Easter Monday, 14 April 1958, he was killed. Harry was nine, and the childhood he had known ended with him. His father’s sister, Aunty Alexandra, took him to London, where he washed cars on weekends and sent the money home. Then his mother sold about an acre of land for £90 and the family boarded the Patris.
“Migration requires courage, but courage doesn’t buy tickets.”
